The production was created in collaboration with the Niš Symphony Orchestra, the Faculty of Arts in Niš, and the National Theatre in Niš.
Some thirty years after Mozart’s celebrated comic opera The Marriage of Figaro, the young composer Gioachino Rossini wrote a new opera featuring the clever barber Figaro as its central character, inspired by Beaumarchais’s play. Unlike Mozart’s work, Rossini’s The Barber of Seville removes the political context and places the comedy of its characters and situations at the forefront, demonstrating his exceptional talent for the genre.
In this opera as well, Figaro is resourceful, quick-witted, and always ready to help. As a go-between and keeper of secrets, he seeks to facilitate the love affair between Rosina and Count Almaviva, opposing the plans of the elderly Dr. Bartolo, who wishes to marry Rosina.
Figaro’s character, together with Rossini’s approach to comic opera, brings freshness and new energy to the traditional genre. The characters of The Barber of Seville belong to the finest tradition of great comedy, and the work continues to captivate audiences with its wit, vitality, musical richness, and irresistible charm.
ABOUT THE COMPOSER
Gioachino Rossini (1792–1868) was one of the most important Italian composers of the 19th century and a central figure in Italian opera, equally successful in both comic and serious operatic genres. He studied at conservatories in Lugano and Bologna and developed his musical style under the influence of Domenico Cimarosa, Haydn, and Mozart. Over time, he surpassed his influences and became an inspiration to composers such as Bellini, Donizetti, and Verdi.
His creative rise began at a very early age. He wrote for Italy’s most important theatres and, during approximately two decades of active work, composed around forty operas. He was known for his extraordinary speed and ease of composition, as well as for occasionally reusing motifs from his own earlier works.
Among his best-known operas are The Barber of Seville, Cinderella, Otello, Semiramide, and William Tell.
