DIRECTOR’S NOTE

The comedy George Dandin is a serious creative challenge both for the acting ensemble and for the theatre as a whole, as it requires a high degree of professionalism when engaging with the principles of Molière’s comedy.

Molière, a unique philosopher among the greatest figures in the history of world theatre, was closely connected with the people. Yet, through the invigorating laughter that runs through his comedies, he encourages the audience to reflect and question themselves and the world around them.

In George Dandin, Molière explores the theme of social climbers, making the play a brilliant critique of fashion-consciousness and hypocrisy. George Dandin, a wealthy country landowner, attempts to move closer to the aristocracy and obtain a noble title by marrying a noblewoman who despises and deceives him. In a world to which he does not belong, surrounded by hypocrisy, lies, blackmail, and insults, he suffers complete defeat through humiliation, moral degradation, and the loss of dignity, realizing that money cannot buy everything – neither a title nor a family, and least of all a sacred marital union and the love within it.
