ABOUT THE AUTHOR

The versatile artist Mate Matišić (1965) is the author of theatre plays, film scripts, film and theatre music, and a multi-instrumentalist who plays jazz and passionately collects and restores old instruments.

He graduated from the Faculty of Law, but never worked in the profession. He was employed as a dramaturg at Jadran Film, and since 1998 has been editor of the Drama Programme of Croatian Radio and an associate professor at the Academy of Dramatic Art, where he heads the Dramaturgy Department. He is known for his socially engaged plays dealing with themes from recent Croatian history. His most significant plays include Life with Uncle, When the Dead Sing, Fine Dead Girls, Nobody’s Son, The Priest’s Children, Sons Die First, The Fourth Sister, What Is a Man Without a Moustache?, People of Wax, and My Sad Monsters. Some of them have also been adapted into films. He has received numerous awards for his plays and music, as well as five Golden Arenas at the Pula Film Festival (three for music and two for Best Screenplay).
